Let's play games for the first time…and fail.

Virgin players violated by old games.

Weewar.com

In the upper right-hand corner you see a link to Weewar.com.

Properly speaking, it is an ad, but I don’t get money for it, just some kind of in-game point thing. It’s actually worth checking out; Like Advance Wars for the DS, but you can take several days to make a move and play against multiple human opponents, getting an email when it is your turn.

If you want to try for a game with me and, invariably, win, my user name is jeremiahbritt.

Site News: Collaborate Page

To make team-ups and two+ person commentaries easier I have added a collaboration page, available HERE.

Site News: Rating System is Flawed.

What I mean is this: Suppose there are two posts. Post A has 10 votes (nine 5 star ratings and 1 3 star) and Post B has 1 vote (5 stars). On a Top Rated list, Post B will show up first.

This assumes that a rating is a cumulative score, like a grade (i.e. 9 answers right, 1 partial credit). However, when you are aggregating votes from a diverse user base this model doesn’t work. The more votes that something has, the more likely it is that there will be one or more contrarians or detractors–people who would have ignored the post if it had a low post count but are encouraged to vote against it because of the number of “views”.

In other words, a boring, non-controversial and overlooked post can rank higher then a much viewed, exciting post that merely has 1 detractor, even out of 10, 100 or more votes. Even oscar winners have a couple of negative reviews, that doesn’t make them worse movies than a home video whose only (positive) review is from the director’s mother.

I’m hoping that there is some way to use the total score of the ratings variable to find “true” highly rated posts. The only problem is, if Post C is rated 1 1000 times and post D is rated 5 100 times, Post C will be ranked higher.

I’m developing the fear that I’ll have to go in and do something along the lines of “1=-2, 2=-1, 3=0, 4=1, 5=2″ and then calculate totals. But I’m hoping that isn’t the only option.

As a temporary fix I’ve also included links to the top 5 most rated.

Once I figure this out, a TOP 100 page will be put up.

Also, a new thread was started on SomethingAwful.com. If you choose to contribute via SA, please use the new thread.

Special Feature

I’ve added the Special Feature! category at left for those games that are so terrible we just can’t stop playing them. The current Featured Game is Dragon’s Lair.

Bug found/fixed

I, like the terrible web designer that I am, didn’t test my website in all browsers. Just today I discovered an IE7 issue that made the page look horrible in that browser.

After about two hours of searching for a solution I found an errant list tag in one of my sidebar widgets that caused absolutely no problem in Firefox.

I feel stupid.

Oh well, live and learn.

Social Networking

I have found another handy little WordPress plugin.

On the bottom of the individual videos and the main pages you will now see this:
If you click on it you either have the option of posting that page/post to a variety of social networking sites
Share This 2
or emailing it to a friend.

FAQ started and Pretty CSS courted, slipped a mickey, fondled

Started the FAQ, and plan on fleshing it out more, maybe even with video tutorials, just to fit into the site format.

I’ve also started fiddling with the CSS, which is silly, because I don’t know anything about CSS.

This is what I have so far:

  • This is a fantastic list!
  • It uses the standard <li> & </li>
  • This is also a list, but I didn’t know about classes when I started it and can’t couldn’t figure out if it is possible to assign list attributes to another function <li2> vs <li>, such as carriage returns.
  • It uses the aforementioned <li2> <li class=”list2″>.
  • This is a blockquote. I’m particularly proud of this. I think it is both pretty and geeky, like that one hot girl that always shows up at the comic book store, but none of the comic nerds know how to talk to her. It uses <blockquote>

THIS IS A SHOUTBOX. The font is bold as default, and the main purpose of this is to operate as a block-quote but draw attention to important disclaimers or announcements by using a psychedelic frog. It uses <shout>

My hope is that all of this looks cool and adds to the feel of a classic gaming site, without being too busy, distracting, or obnoxious.

The other pretty bits on the site are the headers and footers, to which I will add game sprites from popular vids, the rating stars and the tag cloud.

    Updates

These posts could not be transfered because embedding has been disallowed by the user:

So, the site’s pretty much done, at least moved from alpha to beta status. It would be just splendid if you guys could check it out and give me some feedback, or even just vote all of your own videos 5 stars and everyone else’s 1.
